Often known as Westward Ho!, after the town of its location, Royal North Devon is firmly entrenched among the most desirable courses in the country and is a regular feature within the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World.

Its history includes some of the pioneers of golf, from J.H. Taylor, one of the great triumvirate, who started as a caddie at the course, to the likes of Horace Hutchinson, Harold Hilton and Herbert Fowler, who revised the original Old Tom Morris layout.

Located on Northam Burrows, a site of special scientific interest between Northam and Westward Ho, Royal North Devon has hosted The Amateur Championship in 1912, 1925 and 1931, as well as sharing The West of England Championship with Saunton Golf Club.

Saunton's reputation as one of the West Country's premier golfing destinations was firmly established in the 1920s, when Herbert Fowler created the East Course.

Since then the East has provided the stage for many prestigious championships. In 1937 it hosted the English Amateur Championship, won by Frank Pennink, and most recently welcomed the R&A Women's and Men's Senior Amateur Championships in 2024.

These landmark events, together with the many national and international championships held at Saunton over the intervening decades, form part of a proud golfing history that continues to this day.

The West requires both accuracy and strategic positioning from the tee to create the best opportunities into the greens. Its beautifully crafted green complexes demand confidence and commitment, yet remain entirely fair to those who select the correct line and use the natural contours of the links to their advantage.

Recent enhancements to the West Course have further elevated both its presentation and design, firmly establishing it alongside the East as an outstanding championship links. That quality was showcased on the international stage in 2024, when the West joined the East in hosting the R&A Women's and Men's Senior Amateur Championships.
