Designed on superb links terrain just north of Aberdeen, it is the kind of place where the North Sea wind is never just background, it is part of the scorecard.

The course heads out towards the coast before working back inland, so you get a real mix: exposed holes that demand flighted shots and sensible targets, then more sheltered stretches where you can be a bit braver. Underfoot it is classic links, firm fast running turf that rewards imagination, especially if you are happy to use the ground.

Braid's influence shows in the bunkering. They are deep, very penal and often positioned right where you would like to aim, which makes course management a big part of the fun. Miss the fairway and the gorse and whins are more than decorative.

Murcar is a wonderful addition to our 2027 itinerary. The greens are quick and true, the fairways firm, and the rough is proper links rough. On a calm day it is a fair but demanding test, on a windy day it is a challenge, and that is exactly what links golf should be.
